  "News Libraries in Crisis" (research by Nora Paul and Kathleen Hansen, 2002, about the changing roles and impending challenges of news librarians. Project surveyed news librarians, news library managers, and journalists in their organizations.) Also examine the "Notes from the Chair" in NewsLibraryNews' Winter 2002 issue for a recap of the discussion among news librarians attending the Nov. 2001 news librarians' summit.

  "The Future of News Libraries." Session scheduled at the SLA annual conference June 4, 2007 in Denver, CO. Contrary to popular perceptions news organizations and news libraries have MORE opportunities for growth and success than ever before. This session will both challenge and inspire attendees. Moderators will be Nora Paul, Director of the Institute for New Media at the University of Minnesota, and Amy Disch, news researcher at the Columbus Dispatch.

• I am a huge fan of librarians -- especially news librarians who have made my job easier, even enjoyable, more than a few times over the years. (And it doesn't hurt to be married to a wonderful lady who also is a library assistant.)
  
  I fear, despite our protestations that they are more important than ever in the digital age, that they will continue to be cut from newsroom budgets.
  
  While not dealing directly with news librarians, this 33 reasons why libraries and librarians are still extremely important is good fodder for the debate.
